What is the flame-test?

Flame-test determines how easily a material or finished product ignites or burns when placed near the center of a fire or heat source.

Failure to meet fire test requirements is not only a significant public safety risk, subject to market access restrictions, but also enforced by regulators.

The United States, European Union (EU) and other countries have introduced regulations to establish minimum flammability requirements for many types of materials and finished products, reducing unnecessary deaths and injuries caused by fire.

1. Indicates that the flame retardant grade of UL class wire is VW-1 (vertical burning test)

Vertical burning test (VW-1): The test stipulates that the sample is kept vertical, burns with the test burner (flame height 125mm, thermal power 500W) for 15 seconds, then stops for 15 seconds, and repeats 5 times.

Eligibility criteria are:

1. The residual flame should not exceed 60 seconds;

2. The sample should not be burned by more than 25%;

3. The surgical cotton pads at the bottom cannot be ignited by falling objects. (Note: FT-1 grade does not have this requirement)

2. Indicates that the flame retardant grade of CSA type wire is FT, there are 4 kinds in total, of which FT-6 > FT-4 > FT-1 > FT-2

Vertical burning test (FT-1): The test stipulates that the sample is kept vertical, burns with the test burner (flame height 125mm, thermal power 500W) for 15 seconds, then stops for 15 seconds, and repeats 5 times. Qualified standard as below

1. The residual flame should not exceed 60 seconds;

2. The sample should not be burned by more than 25%;

Horizontal combustion test (FT-2): The test stipulates that the sample is kept horizontal, and the test flame is applied to the center of the sample with a test burner (flame height 125mm, thermal power 500W), and the flame is withdrawn after burning for 30s, and the sample is allowed to burn.

Meet two requirements will be regarded as pass.

1. The carbonization length of the sample does not exceed 100mm;

2. The surgical cotton pads at the bottom cannot be ignited by falling objects.

Vertical bracket burning test (FT-4): It is a fire exposure test used to determine the damage height of cables and the smoke emission of cables and optical cables when the fire source is placed.
