How to optimize high-quality High-Speed Connectors

The connector design process for electrical applications requires consideration of many factors, especially when high speed networks are used. Designing High-Quality High-Speed Connectors In addition to assembling conductive traces between the two interconnects, connector designers must consider other optimized design techniques. Also ensure proper signal integrity, etching, tolerances, shielding, etc. when interconnecting high speed connectors.

How to optimize high-quality High-Speed Connectors

1. Signal

The key to optimizing high-speed connections is to ensure minimal signal loss. Once the connected bandwidth is identified, the s-parameters can be further explored to understand the nature of the connection. Collecting a comprehensive understanding of these aspects will allow users to understand the potential of high-speed connectivity. These s-parameters are metrics that manufacturers use to classify connector speeds and should be highly valued. The designers should also be taken to focus on the s-parameters in the time domain, which is a measure of signal-time-related performance.

2. PCB termination options

Designers must also consider the importance of PCB termination options. These options include: surface mount, press fit and in-hole soldering (PIH). These options have their pros and cons. The reason why the crimp terminal becomes a reliable choice is its durability. These rugged connections are safe to connect to the PCB, but they pose a challenge to the high-speed connections that users typically need, making high-density connectors difficult to route signals out of the PCB. Because terminal styles typically require more layers in the PCB, this extends the path of the signal, produces discontinuities  of higher frequency , which will suppress signal speed.

3. Contact

When deciding which style to use in the system, you must consider the contacts inside the mating connector. Designers can make a variety of choices when determining contact configurations, much like termination alternatives, which have their pros and cons. One of these configurations is the edge-mount connector, which is connected to the PCB with a narrow rod with springs for greater continuity. However, shock and vibration pose a threat to the integrity of the connection under pressure, and safety may require additional reinforcement.

4. Crimp connection

Crimp connections are more commonly used for connections under stress that the edge mount connector may not be able to handle. It features a rod and spring design similar to the edge mount connector, but offers additional features that make it advantageous under high pressure conditions. These connectors are very reliable due to the many contact points that are allowed to be connected. Pinouts, springs and additional features enable tight connections and reduced resistance to signal flow. Although the connection is tight, the length of the contacts can cause problems. They sometimes exceed the length of the edge-mounted connector, which in some cases limits continuity.
